In Larderello Geothermal Data Center designed by In-Site
Geothermal energy featured in Sole 24 Ore. It could not miss a focus on Geoveda's data center, designed by In-Site in Larderello, where 10 percent of the world's geothermal energy is produced. Soon, the laying of the foundation stone of what will be Italy's first Green Data Center.
Geothermal energy can also be applied to make our growing data consumption more sustainable. Geoveda, the first green data center in Italy that will harness geothermal energy, designed by Milan-based In-Site, is being built in the Tuscan hills near Larderello, the center of Italian geothermal energy. There are three phases to the entire project: the first, worth about five million euros, will kick off soon. The idea is to build a cooled complex powered entirely by renewable energy, and then rent or resell this space to IT operators to host data servers and applications. Two other data centers that use geothermal energy for cooling and power already exist in Iceland, and a third is being built in the northeast of the island by the company AtNorth. For the Tuscany project, In-Site and Geoveda opted for the Leed v4 BD+C for Data Center certification. This type of certification measures the environmental sustainability of the data center by evaluating the infrastructure's performance in key areas, such as energy and water savings, reduction of CO2 emissions, improvement of the ecological quality of the interior, materials and resources used, and design and site selection.
